History

BuildingIn February 1971, William Wetzel founded Protomatic after an economic slowdown in the space race. Using his hi-tech aerospace background and discerning the upcoming need for high-level prototyping services, he first began manufacturing many components for the automobile industry and laser technology applications.

Today, Protomatic is a high-quality prototype and short-run production machining operation. The company is located in a modern 30,000 square foot facility in Dexter, Michigan. With over three decades of operation, Protomatic offers in-house design support services and prototype manufacturing for a variety of industries including automotive, electronic, medical and optical. The current Vice President and General Manager, Doug Wetzel, brought his expertise from an electrical engineering background and joined the company in 1993, solidifying the continuity of Protomatic and strengthening its family core as a second generation innovator.

The company maintains its flexibility by being easily programmable with state-of-the-art machines operated by teams of diverse and highly skilled employees. Conservative operation of a company that is not highly-leveraged has allowed Protomatic to take advantage of opportunities in the current marketplace to purchase more equipment, thereby allowing Protomatic to position itself strategically for the next curve in the winding road of Michigan's current economy.

Protomatic is one of several companies in the Ann Arbor area that has made a shift from serving the traditional automotive market to alternative energy, medical, defense and aerospace industries in recent years. The company is now working with battery and fuel cell groups and looking to work with hi-tech startups. A financially sound company is one in which you can have faith while doing business. We take great pride in our company, and we believe it shows.

Protomatic has a highly qualified and broadly experienced team of employees who are committed to on-time delivery of high quality parts at competitive pricing. Quality standards are ensured through a complete process of testing and state-of-the-art inspection. Protomatic, Inc. is an ISO 9001:2008 registered company and is AS 9100B:2004 and ISO 13485:2003 compliant.
