Protomatic was founded in 1971 by Bill Wetzel after a slowdown in the space race. Using his aerospace background, and seeing the upcoming need for high-level prototyping, he began manufacturing components for the auto industry.
Today, Protomatic has a state-of-the-art 30,500 sq. ft. facility in southeast Michigan not far from Ann Arbor. Lighting and climate-control have been designed especially for the precision required in the prototyping and manufacturing functions of the facility.
While Protomatic remains involved in the automotive industry, the emphasis has evolved into the medical and aerospace industries, as well as defense and optical, and hi-tech start-ups.
The current Managing Director, Doug Wetzel, has a background in electrical engineering and joined the company in 1993, continuing the family tradition of combining innovation with engineering.
