Nickel-Based Superalloys in the Aerospace Industry

Nickel-based superalloys, such as Inconel, have an unparalleled combination of toughness, resistance to degradation and high-temperature strength. Utilized in aircraft turbines, rocket engines and other applications that demand maximum toughness, they are critical to the efficient operation of these delicate machines at elevated temperatures.

The formulation and constitution of nickel-based superalloys is highly involved and exhaustive in its efforts to maximize the materials beneficial properties. From the inclusion of additional elements, such as chromium and iron, that aims to improve oxidation and corrosion resistance to the use of liquid-metal coolants to increase thermal gradients during solidification, the process is results in a very reliable, very durable material.

This durability, however, comes at a cost. Unlike traditional alloys, superalloys are much more difficult to work with. Often, traditional CNC machining equipment and milling machines are incapable of working with these hardened materials. Furthermore, even with the proper equipment, additional knowledge is necessary to properly work them without compromising their integrity.

At Protomatic, we have over forty years of experience with meeting the demanding needs of the aerospace industry. Having served both the commercial and military markets, we have a proven track record in manufacturing precision parts and assemblies to military specs, regardless of the market being served. Our state-of-the-art equipment combined with our deep understanding of the materials we work with puts us in a unique position to take your engineer’s vision and transform it into a viable, working prototype.

If you’re interested in pursuing the development of a prototype intended for the aerospace industry, we encourage you to reach out to our experienced personnel. With our ability to work with the industry’s most difficult superalloys – Kovar™, Haynes 25™, Hastelloy™, Invar™, Inconel™ and Cobalt and Nickel Steels – we can help you transform your initial idea into a viable proof of concept.
